3D-printed protective masks for clinic in Bremen

The DFKI research department Cyber-Physical System and the work group Computer Architecture of the University Bremen, both led by Prof. Dr. Rolf Drechsler, support the Klinikum Bremen-Nord hospital with the production of fixtures for facial protective masks. The request reached the team via contacts from an ongoing research project in which the clinical association Gesundheit Nord is cooperating. The fixtures are printed in stacks and then separated and sanded off. The research department is able to print twelve units per day using it’s two 3D printers. The plan is to print a total of 60 to 100 units. The visor that is subsequently attached to the fixtures is produced by the hospital itself.
The protective masks serve for the prevention of droplet infections, one of the main transmission ways for the Covid-19 virus, and are given to the medical personell of the clinic. The facial protection allows for a longer use of respiratory masks. The visor is changeable and can be cleaned with hot water and disinfectants.
